2023 Review

RIDGE MEADOWS HAS AN IMPRESSIVE SHOWING AT THE 2023 TREVOR WINGROVE TOURNAMENT

Coquitlam, BC – June 7, 2023 – 28 teams with players from British Columbia, Alberta, and the United States competed in 5 divisions at the 2023 Trevor Wingrove Memorial Tournament.  The Ridge Meadows Burrards walked away with 4 golds and a bronze. Langley won a gold, silver, and bronze. The Coquiltlam Adanacs had 2 silvers. Vancouver Island had a strong showing with Juan De Fuca winning a silver and a bronze while Saanich snapped up a silver. Delta and Team BC also both picked up bronze medals in their respective divisions.

 

PeeWee (U13)

In the PeeWee division the Ridge Meadows Burrards defeated the Coquitlam Adanacs 9-4.  Dawson Malawsky lead the Burrards with 3 goals and 1 assist.  Other goal scorers were Hunter Vanderwal, Daxton Lowe, Liam O’Connor, Tanner Craiggs, Ethan Bay, and Hauden Yerbruy.  Benjamin Beitel had 3 assists.  The Burrards are coached by Curt Malawsky (2023 National Lacrosse League Coach of the Year and Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Famer).  Trevor Wingrove and Curt Malawsky were former teammates. For Coquitlam, Chase Wiseman had 2 goals while Marcus Phillips and Stefa Racic chipped in singles.  The Langley Thunder beat the Nanaimo Timbermen 10-4 in the bronze medal game.

 

Bantam (U15)

Ridge Meadows won the Bantam division with a devisive 10-2 win over the Saanich Tigers.  Josh Bonner had 4 goals for the Burrards, Jeremy Dybwad scored twice, and singles came from Quinn Hunter, Kingston Hebner, Colton Craiggs, and Josiah Allen.  Both of Saanich’s goals came from Donomic Smart.  In the Bronze medal game, the Juan De Fuca Whalers beat the Coquitlam Adanacs 10-5.  Cody Junghans had 3 goals for JDF.  Oakland White, Cayden Johnson, and Kadyn Hill had 2 goals each and Marcus Alore scored one.

Midget (U17)

In an action packed final, the Langley Thunder needed overtime to beat the Juan De Fuca Whalers 7-6.  The score was tied 4-4 at the end of regulation and it was Braydon Longacre who scored the winner with 1.6 seconds remaining.  Longacre finished the night with 2 goals, Mac Timms had 3, and singles came from Cohen Lifton and Max Goller.  Juan De Fuca scored twice in OT.  Phoenix Eves and Noah Schumann had 2 goals each and single goals went to Tom Hoshal and Breckyn Williams.  Both goalies, Marcus Khan for Langley and Matthew Denis for Juan De Fuca were excellent and both finished the night with an assist each.  In the bronze final, Ridge Meadows outlasted the Saanich Tigers 4-3.  There were 4 different goal scorers for the Burrards:  Callum Olson, Kayden McIntosh, Riley Alexander, and Cody Todd.

Female Bantam (U15)

The Ridge Meadows Burrards defeated the Coquitlam Adanacs 7-3 in the gold medal game.  The Burrards had 4 goals in the third period to secure the championship.  Ridge Meadows’ scoring was well distributed with Paige Downey and Charlie Kallin scoring twice and singles by Grace Carriss, Avery Metz, and Tmira Sirovyak.  The hometown Adanacs got 2 goals from Kaitlyn Andre and 1 from Saia Hansra.  Team BC won the bronze medal of USBOXLA by a score of 5-4,  Team BC had 3 goals from Sophie Powell and 2 goals from Avery Van Ryan.  The Team BC entry was, in fact, a U13 team who entered the tournament to play up a division.

 

Female Midget (U17)

The Ridge Meadows Burrards won the Female Midget division with a 6-3 victory over the Langley Thunder.   Mya Jakovijevich had 2 goals and single markers came from Deliah Todd, Cadence Sironen, Sarah Halliday, and Emily Baldwin.  Kylie O’Donnell had 2 goals for the Thunder with Makayla Wartak picking up the other tally.  Delta Islanders won the bronze medal over USBOXLA 9-5.  Katalina Rojas had 2 goals for Delta.

Trevor Wingrove Most Inspirational Player

The Trevor Wingrove Most Inspirational Player Award was given in each of our 5 divisions.  This athlete is recognized for quality of play, sportsmanship, and inspirational play to teammates.  Each recipient was given an amazing prize package that included a Gait Lacrosse stick and swag from USBOXLA.

  • PeeWee – Noah Maglio (Coquitlam Adanacs)

  • Bantam – Sawyer Soh (Coquitlam Adanacs)

  • Midget – Jesse & Cody Porter (Edmonton Warriors)  

  • Female Bantam – Whitney Todd (Ridge Meadows Burrards)  

  • Female Midget – Kadence Richardson (Coquitlam Adanacs)




Some of lacrosse’s brightest young stars were on display at this tournament.  Many of these players will go on to play for Team BC, Team Alberta, and other all-star teams in pursuit of national and international titles.  Many of the older athletes in the Midget/U17 division will suit up for NCAA teams in the United States.
