2019 Review

This year’s Trevor Wingrove Memorial Tournament was one of the best on record. 23 teams from the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, Alberta, and the United States battled for supremacy in three divisions: PeeWee, Bantam, and Midget. The Trevor Wingrove Most Inspirational Player Award is also awarded to a player in each division for quality of play, sportsmanship, and inspirational play to teammates.

In the PeeWee division (ages 11-12) the final was played between Ridge Meadows and USBOXLA. Atticus Marshall (1 goal, 3 assists) and Noah Allen (2 goals) led scoring for Ridge Meadows who won 7-2. 11 Ridge Meadows players scored points in an impressive championship game in a very competitive division. This marks the first ever medal for USBOXLA who have come to this elite tournament for the past 4 years. In the bronze medal game the Langley Thunder defeated the Juan de Fuca Whalers 12-6. The Trevor Wingrove Most Inspirational Player Award was given to Teagan Douglas of the Delta Islanders. Goaltending legend Dallas Eliuk, Trevor’s teammate with the Coquitlam Sr. Adanacs, was an assistant coach for USBOXLA. Eliuk was inducted in to the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2013.

The hometown Coquitlam Adanacs won the Bantam division (ages 13-14) defeating USBOXLA 13-5. Cole Kennett (4 goals), Nathan Chalmers (3 goals, 1 assist), and Lucas Baxter (4 assists) led scoring for Coquitlam. USBOXLA had strong games from Erik Volfson (1 goal, 2 assists) and Jack Cyrek (2 goals, 1 assist). In the bronze medal game, the Juan De Fuca Whalers defeated the Ridge Meadows Burrards by a final of 7-3. Juan De Fuca had 3 goals by Jett Klassen and 1 goal and 2 assists by Kaylan Sayer. The Trevor Wingrove Most inspirational Player Award was given to Alex Tan of the Coquitlam Adanacs.

In the afternoon finale it was a fast paced and exciting Midget final (ages 15-16) that saw the Burnaby Lakers defeat the Coquitlam Adanacs by a score of 7-4. Burnaby had an impressive tournament and went undefeated including a big win over previously undefeated Ridge Meadows, who picked up the bronze medal. Burnaby’s Taylor Nellis won the Trevor Wingrove Most Inspirational Player Award and Joshua Gabriele led all scorers with 2 goals and 2 assists. 3 other Burnaby players had 2 points each – Ryan Nagy and Alexander Cabeca had 2 goals each and Lexx Edwards had 2 assists. For Coquitlam, Josh Iacino had 2 goals and David Charney had 1 goal and 1 assist. For Maple Ridge, their scoring was Page 2 distributed to 8 players with Joel McCormick, Rhys Marshall, Ethan M’Lot, and Cal Munro each getting 1 goal and 1 assist. Ridge Meadows was coached by two of Trevor’s former Junior Adanacs teammates: Daren Fridge and Curt Malawsky. Malawsky was inducted in to the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2015 and, as head coach, just led the Calgary Roughnecks to the 2019 NLL Champions Cup.

The Coquitlam Minor Lacrosse Association is proud to host this elite tournament. The CMLA will also host the 2019 Box Lacrosse Nationals from August 20-24. The Trevor Wingrove Memorial Tournament coordinator is Heather Wilson Banks who leads a dedicated group of volunteers who oversee 54 games played in three different arenas. We are grateful to all of our sponsors: Vancouver Warrior, Mogul Mesh, Powell Lacrosse, Giant Lacrosse, Cali-Lax, Coquitlam Junior Adanacs, Coquitlam Senior Adanacs, Canuel Caterers, Cyclone Taylor Sports, Action Pro Photo, Fern Web Design & Victory Trophies. Former Junior Adanacs Tyler Pace (Langley Sr. Thunder and Calgary Roughnecks), Christian Del Bianco (Coquitlam Sr. Adanacs and Calgary Roughnecks), and Travis Cornwall (Maple Ridge Burrards and Saskatchewan Rush). Pace and Del Bianco just won the 2019 NLL Champions Cup with the Calgary Roughnecks.

On June 7th the Coquitlam Junior Adanacs raised a banner in to the rafters of the Poirier Sports & Leisure Centre for Trevor’s father the late Les Wingrove. Les Wingrove passed away in 2018 – he is the founder of the Coquitlam Junior Adanacs and is considered one of the game’s great builders. Les’ new banner will sit next to Trevor’s #23 which was retired by the Coquitlam Junior Adanacs in 2013. The Coquitlam Junior Adanacs narrowly beat the visiting Langley Junior Thunder by a score of 11-10 with many players from the tournament in attendance.
